Plumber in Bradford, ON

Bradford at a glance

Bradford is the main urban area of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury, south of Barrie. It overlooks the Holland Marsh, a farming area on the Holland River, which flows into Lake Simcoe. The river is named for Samuel Holland, the first Surveyor General of British North America.

What that means for your plumbing

Low, flat land near a marsh and a river can mean a high water table. Homes on the lower edges of town lean hard on their sump pumps in spring, and a backwater valve protects finished basements from sewer backups in storms. See sump pumps and backwater valves.

Commuter households

Many Bradford households commute south. A leak that starts after everyone leaves can run all day. A water leak alarm under the water heater and the washer, or an automatic shut-off valve, is worth considering.

The corduroy road across the marsh

The first settlers to cross the Holland River, in the fall of 1819, were three Irishmen: James Wallace, Lewis Algeo and Robert Armstrong. Early settlers told the province in 1824 that an impassable swamp cut them off from Yonge Street, and in the fall of 1825 Robert Armstrong and his sons finished the first corduroy road across the Holland Marsh. That road became part of the Penetanguishene Road and later part of Yonge Street. Building near wet ground has always been a challenge here, and it still affects basements today.
