Hewson's Point and the Warnicas

Innisfil was first surveyed in 1820, and its name comes from Inis Fáil, an ancient name for Ireland. The first settlers, the Hewson and Soules families, came up the East Holland River and across Lake Simcoe to Point Endeavour, which they renamed Hewson's Point; today it's Big Bay Point. The Hewsons arrived on March 30, 1820. The Warnica family followed in 1823, in what is now Painswick, and the township's first sawmill was built at Tollendal in 1829. Much of that original township is now inside Barrie after the 2010 boundary change. Lakeside homes here should keep a close eye on sump pumps during the spring thaw.
