Stroud is a village in the Town of Innisfil, just south of Barrie. Settlers began building homes here in 1825, and by 1962 the village had about 700 people, a post office, a police station, a fire hall and three churches.

From Meyer's Corners to Stroud

The settlement was first called Meyer's Corners, then Victoria after the Queen. To avoid confusion with other post offices named Victoria, it became Stroud in 1875, after Stroud in England, home town of local MP W.C. Little. The first church in Innisfil Township, St. James Methodist, was founded here in the 1830s, and its cemetery holds graves from as early as 1842. Stroud School, the township's first, opened in a log building in 1838. In 1961 the village even entered a brick-throwing contest against its namesakes in England, Oklahoma and New South Wales. Older homes near the main crossroads are worth a camera inspection of the drain before any renovation.
