Plumber in Oro-Medonte, ON

Oro-Medonte at a glance

Oro-Medonte is a township on the north-western shore of Lake Simcoe. The townships of Oro and Medonte were each incorporated in 1850 and, together with the Police Village of Hawkestone, merged on January 1, 1994. Its concession roads, still called lines, are now streets and exits off Highway 11.

What that means for your plumbing

Most of the township is rural, so many homes rely on private wells and septic systems. When the pump or pressure tank fails, there's no city water to fall back on. Know where your pump breaker and pressure gauge are; see well pumps and water treatment.

Cottages and ski country

Lake Simcoe cottages and homes near the ski hills often sit empty for weeks. Before leaving one in winter, shut off the water, drain the lines and add plumbing antifreeze to traps if the heat will be off. See snowbelt frozen pipes.

Cahiagué and the Oro settlement

The Huron village of Cahiagué, near Hawkestone, was the capital of the Ahrendarrhonon (Rock) nation; Samuel de Champlain estimated it at 200 houses in 1615. After the War of 1812, Lieutenant-Governor Sir Peregrine Maitland offered land grants to Black veterans in what became Oro Township, between Kempenfelt Bay and Penetanguishene Bay. The name Oro is thought to come from the Spanish word for gold. Old farmhouses here have seen many rounds of plumbing changes; a well and septic check is wise before buying one.
