A Pipe Burst. What Should I Do in the First Ten Minutes?
Close the main water shut-off, keep away from water near anything electrical, open the lowest tap to drain the pipes, move what you can out of the water, take photos and send an urgent request.
Request a plumberWhere is the main shut-off?
In most Barrie homes it's in the basement where the water line comes in, beside the meter. Find it now, before you need it, and tag it so everyone in the house knows.
What if it won't turn?
Don't force an old gate valve; it can snap. Contact the city's water department, which can shut off the supply at the property line.
Is the electricity safe?
If water is near the panel, outlets, the furnace or extension cords, stay out. Only switch off a breaker if you can reach it standing on dry ground.
How do I drain the pipes?
Open the lowest tap in the house, such as a laundry tub or basement shower, to let the water left in the lines run out. Then turn off the water heater.
Do I need photos?
Yes. Photograph the break, the water and anything damaged before you start cleaning. Insurers want them, and so will the plumber.
Who do I contact?
Send an urgent request saying what burst and where. Then call your insurer. See emergency plumber.
How do I stop it happening again?
Ask the plumber why it burst. Most winter bursts trace back to a cold spot: a drafty rim joist, an outside wall or an unheated garage. Fixing the cold spot matters as much as fixing the pipe. A plumber can also check your water pressure; pressure that's too high puts extra strain on every pipe and fitting in the house.
