How Do I Hire a Certified Plumber in Ontario?

In Ontario, plumbing is a compulsory trade: the work must be done by a certified plumber or a registered apprentice. Ask for proof of certification, use a TSSA-registered contractor for gas work, check whether a permit is needed and get the price in writing.

What does certified mean?

Plumber (trade code 306A) is a compulsory trade in Ontario. Certified plumbers hold a Certificate of Qualification, now issued through Skilled Trades Ontario, which keeps a public register.

What about gas work?

Gas lines, gas water heaters and other gas appliances must be handled by a contractor registered with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), using licensed gas technicians.

Does my job need a permit?

Adding or moving plumbing, a new bathroom, a backwater valve or a sewer replacement usually does. The plumber or your contractor can tell you what the City of Barrie or your township requires.

What should the quote say?

The work to be done, materials, whether permits, inspection and patching are included, the start date and how long you'll be without water.

What are the warning signs?

No certificate number, cash-only deals, pressure to sign now, or an offer to skip the permit to save money.

Ready to book?

Send a request and a plumber will get in touch to talk through the job. For urgent problems, see emergency plumber.

Should I check insurance?

Yes. Ask whether the company carries liability insurance and WSIB coverage for its workers, so you aren't exposed if something goes wrong on your property.

What should I keep afterwards?

The invoice, permit and any warranty. If you sell the house, buyers often ask for proof that plumbing work was permitted and inspected. For larger jobs, it's reasonable to get two or three quotes and compare exactly what each one includes, not just the total.
